9/11 Memorial Art Cart Returns June 23
- June 8, 2026
We are excited to announce this summer’s return of the 9/11 Memorial Art Cart. The Art Cart offers visitors with children free, self-guided activities that help young visitors understand the events of 9/11 and explore the unique design aspects of the Memorial plaza. These age-appropriate offerings help spark discussion about the legacy of 9/11 and why it’s important to remember the attacks.
As an education staff member, I have witnessed firsthand how impactful this experience can be for young visitors. It is often the first opportunity in their visit for children to start processing the scale of what happened at this site.
This year, education staff will offer two different Art Cart activities:
The Meaningful Adjacencies activity helps visitors discover the story behind the unique arrangement of the names inscribed around the Memorial pools. Participants then create tissue paper flowers they can place inside the names as a tribute.
The Survivor Tree activity reveals the significance of the special Callery Pear tree on the plaza that survived the attacks on 9/11. After learning the story behind the tree, visitors decorate colorful paper leaves with images and messages of resilience.
From June 23 -August 14 (excluding July 3 and the week of July 13), the Art Cart will be available on the Memorial plaza from 10 am-12 pm Tuesday-Friday, weather permitting.
