9/11 Memorial Museum Honors Veterans Day with Salute to Service
In honor of Veterans Day, the 9/11 Memorial Museum will pay tribute to veterans during a special five-day Salute to Service from Nov. 7 to Nov. 11. Throughout Salute to Service, veterans will receive free admission to the museum. On Nov. 7 and Nov. 8, veterans will receive up to two 50% discounted museum tickets for family members.
Programs during Salute to Service include, two StoryCorps animated shorts that will be screened in the museum auditorium, art activities for ticketed museum guests with children focusing on themes of heroism and patriotism, and a live talk “The Stories They Tell: World Trade Center Steel in Afghanistan” hosted by Mellon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Andrew Hammond. This discussion will use a map of World Trade Center steel burial sites in Afghanistan to describe some of the earliest and most significant post-9/11 missions fought by U.S. Special Forces.
On Nov. 9, American flags will be placed on the memorial at the names of the first responders killed in the attacks who were also veterans. The flags will be placed by members of FDNY, NYPD and PAPD. On Nov. 11, Team Red White & Blue will place yellow roses on the memorial at the names of those killed in the attacks who served in the United States military in honor of Veterans Day.
