Nawaz is formerly a high-ranking member of the Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir, who spent four years in an Egyptian prison for his affiliation with the group. He emerged to help establish the Quillium Foundation, the world’s first counter-extremism think tank, where he serves as executive director.
He is also the founder of Khudi, a counter-extremism social movement working to promote a democratic culture in Pakistan.
