A class of New York City Police Department recruits visited the 9/11 Memorial & Museum Wednesday morning to honor and remember the members of the NYPD who sacrificed their lives on September 11.

More than 440 recruits marched in formation around the South Pool before laying a wreath beside the bronze parapet of the pool, where the names of the NYPD members are memorialized.

The visit was the first time an NYPD class came to the Memorial and Museum as part of the official training in the NYPD Police Academy. The FDNY requires probationary firefighters to visit the museum as part of their training.

In attendance were the NYPD’s First Deputy Commissioner Ben Tucker as well as three legacy recruits who lost a loved one on 9/11: Brittany Roy, daughter of Timothy Alan Roy Sr.; Michael Zadroga, nephew of Detective James Zadroga, who died of a 9/11-related illness and for whom the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act  is named; and Christopher Ryder, nephew of Inspector James Guida.

"The New York Police Department has been an incredible partner and contributor to the Memorial & Museum," said Alice Greenwald, president and CEO of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, addressing the recruits. "And we are truly indebted to the leadership of the department for their extraordinary assistance in documenting and preserving this history."

"Because of their support, this sacred place serves as a lasting testament of the courage and sacrifice of first responders."
