Program Flies US Flags from Across the Country Over Memorial Plaza
Today marks the 240th anniversary of the official adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States of America.
Flag Day, made an official observance by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, is a good time to highlight a program that allows people to send a flag to wave above the 9/11 Memorial. Throughout the year, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum honors requests from people across the United States, asking that their American flag be flown over the site.
Many of the requests come from members of the military looking to mark significant moments of their career such as retirement from service. Some flags come to the 9/11 Memorial after having been flown over military bases, the Pentagon, the U.S. Capitol, and other memorials and significant landmarks.
The service is offered at no additional charge beyond shipping and is open to all who are interested. After a flag is flown, it is folded and returned to the sender with an official certificate.
More information about the flag-flying program can be found here. Please contact info@911memorial.org with questions.
