Women of the FDNY: Fighting Fires and Discrimination

  • Thursday, September 19
  • 6 to 7 p.m.
  • Auditorium
The speaker panel from the Public Program

Discrimination tested the strength and resilience of women serving in the FDNY long before they served with distinction at the World Trade Center on 9/11 and during the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero afterwards. When women were first admitted to the FDNY Academy in the 1970s, they had to fight not only fires, but for an equal place in the department. To discuss the history and evolution of women's roles in the FDNY, 9/11 Memorial & Museum President & CEO Beth Hillman is joined by retired FDNY Captain Brenda Berkman and firefighter Regina Wilson.

The Alice M. Greenwald Public Program is made possible with support from Joel S. Marcus, Executive Chairman & Founder, Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc./Alexandria Venture Investments, Jane Rosenthal, Co-Founder & CEO, Tribeca Enterprises, and Christine A. Ferer.
