9/11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM JOINED BY PRESENTING SPONSOR CON EDISON FOR ANNUAL TRIBUTE IN LIGHT INSTALLATION

New York, NY – September 5, 2024 – The iconic Tribute in Light commemorative art installation returns for another year, viewable within a 60-mile radius around lower Manhattan from dusk on September 11 to dawn on September 12, to mark the 23rd anniversary of 9/11. These twin beams of light, which evoke the original Twin Towers, have become an essential element of how New York City always remembers our city’s resilience in the face of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and all those who were killed. The 9/11 Memorial plaza opens to the public at 3 pm on September 11, 2024 and will remain open until midnight so that visitors from across the city and around the world can view the installation from this sacred site of remembrance and learning.

“With more than 100 million Americans born since 9/11 or too young to remember that tragic day, it’s imperative that we inspire a new generation by sharing the unity and resilience of our collective response. Tribute in Light’s twin beams reach high into the night sky to remind everyone of who and what we lost – and found –23 years ago,” said Beth Hillman, 9/11 Memorial & Museum President and CEO. “We are deeply grateful for the continued support of our Presenting Sponsor, Con Edison, and also thank I LOVE NY and Assembly Member Charles Fall for their support of Tribute in Light.”

“Ensuring that all New Yorkers remember those we lost on 9/11 is important to us at Con Edison,” said Con Edison President Matthew Ketschke. “For over 200 years, we have been the quiet backbone of New York City, and we are grateful for the opportunity to pay homage to this city and the Twin Towers through Tribute in Light.”

Empire State Development Vice President and Executive Director of Tourism Ross D. Levi said, "I LOVE NY is honored to support the Tribute in Light installation so residents and visitors alike can experience this beautiful, unique and solemn remembrance of 9/11. Thousands of guests come every year to visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, and it is very appropriate to have this art installation commemorate the anniversary date itself."

"On 9/11, the world turns its eyes to New York City, where the lights that pierce our skyline symbolize our collective memory and unwavering strength,” said New York Assemblyman Charles Fall. “It is our solemn duty to ensure that these lights continue to shine brightly each year, honoring the lives we lost and the resilience that defines our city."

Tribute in Light was first presented six months after 9/11 in March 2002, while rescue, recovery, and relief efforts at Ground Zero continued. The installation consists of eighty-eight 7,000-watt xenon light bulbs assembled in two 48-foot squares, echoing the shape and orientation of the original Twin Towers. The lights are custom-made by Space Cannon and the installation is produced annually by Michael Ahern Production Services (MAPS).

This event is supported by a Market New York grant from Empire State Development and I LOVE NY/New York State's Division of Tourism, awarded through the Regional Economic Development Council initiative.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is the country’s principal institution concerned with exploring 9/11, documenting its impact, and examining its continuing significance. This mission is advanced through commemoration, education, and inspiration. Located on eight of the 16 acres of the World Trade Center site, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum remembers and honors the 2,938 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993. Through exhibitions, a wide variety of programs, and commemorative events, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum seeks to educate the public – particularly the 100 million Americans born since the attacks or those too young to remember – about the consequences of terrorism and its impact on individuals and communities. Through preserving and sharing stories of resilience, compassion, and service, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum hopes to inspire individuals to build a more compassionate and secure world. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s programs are made possible, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
