New York, NY – Cyndi Lauper will perform during “9/11 Tribute in Light: Live from Lower Manhattan,” a one-hour Disney Entertainment Television multiplatform live special airing Friday, September 11, at 8:00 p.m. EDT across ABC, Disney+, Hulu, National Geographic, ABC Owned Television Stations livestreams and ABC News Live, in partnership with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Lauper’s performance will be part of “Tribute in Light,” the annual commemorative public art installation that has illuminated the New York City skyline every September 11 since 2002. Previously announced performers include Lainey Wilson and John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting.
The special will mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks and honor the victims killed, reflect on the lasting impact of the attacks, and commemorate the resilience of survivors, families, first responders, and communities forever changed by that day. Hosted live from New York City by “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir, “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts and anchor Diane Sawyer, the broadcast will culminate in live coverage of “Tribute in Light.” Lauper, Wilson and Ondrasik will perform from the base of the iconic beams. This special was created in partnership with Alex Coletti Productions, Executive Producer Patrick Menton, and Production Designer LeRoy Bennett.
Before the primetime special, “Paying Tribute: Live from Lower Manhattan” will air at 7:30 p.m. EDT on WABC-TV. Hosted by ABC News Live “Prime” anchor, Linsey Davis, Sade Baderinwa and Mike Marza, the program will offer viewers across the tri-state area an opportunity to hear inspiring stories of resilience, healing, and service as Tribute in Light emerges at dusk.
Cyndi Lauper is a groundbreaking Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award-winning songwriter and performing artist. With global record sales of more than 50 million, Lauper has created some of popular music’s most enduring songs, including “Time After Time,” “True Colors” and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” She won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist for her debut album, She’s So Unusual, and became the first woman in history to have four top-five singles from a debut album. Lauper was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015 and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2025.
"I’m grateful to be a part of the 9/11 Tribute in Light. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years. Like so many of us, I feel like it was just yesterday. I was outside the city that morning and desperate to get back to my family, a luxury that, sadly, a lot of people were not afforded,” said Cyndi Lauper. “I am honored to sing for them, those that we lost, and the families and friends who remain, and for my city. We will never forget."
ABOUT THE 9/11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is dedicated to exploring 9/11, documenting its impact, and examining its continuing significance. This mission is advanced through commemoration, education, and inspiration. Located on eight of the 16 acres of the World Trade Center site, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum remembers and honors the 2,983 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993. Through exhibitions, a wide variety of programs, and commemorative events, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum seeks to educate the public – particularly the 100 million Americans born since the attacks or those too young to remember them – about the consequences of terrorism and its impact on individuals and communities.
