Letters of Sacrifice is a memorial to service members who have been killed in action since 2001 when the Global War on Terror began. As of November 20th, 2014, 6,814 men and women have lost their lives fighting on our country’s behalf. This memorial contains one representational condolence letter for each and every deceased man or woman in uniformed that has been Killed In Action. The walls of Letters of Sacrifice will only get taller as the war continues, making it an on-going memorial. Thus why there is empty wire above the condolence letters, to insinuate the fact that we are currently at war. I chose to represent our fallen with a condolence letter to show that the sacrifice is made by more than our heroes, but also by the commander that has to write that letter, the service members who fought along side their buddy, or the mother, father, husband, wife or child who has to read that letter. The sacrifice of serving our country goes beyond weapons and fighting. These men and women were husbands or wives, sons or daughters, and even mothers or fathers. As a veteran myself, I feel that in our country it is easy to forget about our service members and the sacrifices that they have made. I created Letters of Sacrifice to honor our fallen and to push the idea that he or she is more than just a number.
