Behind the Lens: FDNY Probie at the South Pool

The 9/11 Memorial regularly hosts probationary classes of cadets from the FDNY and the NYPD. In this photo, an FDNY “probie” cadet takes a quiet moment to himself walking along the south pool. His class had visited the Memorial during an unusually warm week in late October, and you can sense the heat and humidity radiating in lower Manhattan. I like this photo because it captures the special quality of the light in the mornings, as the sun peaks through the surrounding skyscrapers. The light changes on an hourly basis, especially at the south pool.
