Educational Activity Stations at the 9/11 Memorial Museum
The 9/11 Memorial hosts Activity Stations to effectively engage intergenerational audiences, including young visitors and their caretakers, with a program connected to artifacts and themes in the Museum.
Offering age-appropriate entry-points into the history of the World Trade Center, 9/11, and its aftermath, the activity stations program is meant to spark conversations between children and their guardians. Interested visitors can drop-in and participate in one or all of the following activities in the Education Center’s Classroom C.
Activities included in the program are:
• Design a Memorial
Explore the symbolism of Michael Arad’s design for the National September 11 Memorial and design a 9/11 memorial through drawing or three-dimensional construction.
• A Candle for Remembrance
Roll a candle out of beeswax sheets to light at a September 11 memorial vigil.
• Community Mural
Pay tribute to 9/11 by adding pictures, symbols, or words to a large memorial mural on display in Classroom C.
• Tic Tac Toe
Use clues inside the squares of a tic tac toe board to find artifacts throughout the Museum. Pick up the game in the classroom, visit the Museum floor to look for these objects, and return to the classroom to receive a prize.
The activity station program takes place every week on Saturday in the Museum’s Education Center from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is free for ticketed museum guests.
