In the ENR New York’s annual best projects competition, the 9/11 Memorial was awarded Best Landscape/Hardscape 2012. To be eligible, project submitters had to meet a list of criteria including relaying the obstacles they faced during design or construction and how these challenges were managed.

The memorial was the first project at the World Trade Center site to open. It has had more than 5 million visitors while construction continues on other WTC construction projects.

One judge in the ENR report lauded the memorial as a "magnitude of sheer simplicity with such emotional impact."
