Providing for the Common Defense at the 9/11 Memorial Museum
On Monday, March 18, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum will host a public program featuring Admiral (Ret.) Gary Roughead and Ambassador Eric S. Edelman, the co-chairs of the National Defense Strategy Commission (NDSC), in conversation about the commission’s recent report.
As a congressionally chartered and nonpartisan body, the NDSC is tasked with assessing the readiness of the United States’ armed forces to respond to the prevailing military threats of the day. The NDSC also evaluates the resources available to the military in defending against these threats.
In November 2018, the NDSC, led by Admiral Roughead and Ambassador Edelman, presented the Senate Armed Services Committee with its report, “Providing for the Common Defense: The Assessment and Recommendations of the National Defense Strategy Commission.” The NDSC report issues an urgent call for rethinking the U.S. approach to national defense, noting that in a changing global landscape, U.S. military superiority is no longer guaranteed.
Among some of the issues facing the U.S. highlighted in “Providing for the Common Defense” are non-state actors, the rise of authoritarianism and the ambitions of countries like Russia and China. The NDSC warns that the United States’ military advantage against these challenges is diminishing and urges the application of significant resources to rectify the situation.
Admiral Roughead and Ambassador Edelman will come together on the Museum stage to discuss their findings and recommendations and help us consider what U.S. national defense should look like in 2019.
Join us on Monday, March 18, at 7 p.m. for “Providing for the Common Defense.” You can reserve tickets here.
