In 2016, multiple cyberattacks by foreign operatives targeted politicians and political organizations with the aim of influencing the presidential election. How did such a grievous security breach occur, and how can the U.S. defend itself against future cyberattacks? Avril D. Haines, a senior research scholar at Columbia University and former deputy national security advisor to President Obama and CIA deputy director, shares her thoughts on the state of U.S. cybersecurity.
