Description

An Empty Space is inspired by Don DeLillo's haunting novel, Falling Man.

There are a few things about this song that may be of interest to listeners. Its singer, Mary Jacobsen, escaped from the 88th floor of the first tower that was hit, the north tower. As far as I know, everybody above the 89th floor of the north tower died that day.

Often when I record songs that have been inspired by books that I have read, I am struck when a musician echoes something from the book (a book that they have probably not read!). For me, that happens on this song in Pete Smith's guitar solo. It's as if his entire solo is the last paragraph of the book. The notes, for me, seem to echo what the words are describing, what Keith is looking at, as it descended and danced in the wind.

The musicians on this track are:

Bob Eschenbrenner: acoustic guitar
Mary Jacobsen: vocals
Michael Sciotto: drums
Rick Mullen: bass
Adam Holzman: piano, clavinette, organ
Pete Smith: electric guitar
Jay Prince: background vocals
