The Towers and the Wire Walker

once upon a time
two towers rose so high
looking over New York City
a quarter mile up in the sky
a young man named Philippe Petit
saw the towers in a magazine
right then and there he knew his dream
was to walk a wire in between

to go where no one has ever gone
to do what no one has ever done
to take that step up in the sky
and trust the wire with your life

trust the wire with your life

he went to visit the towers one day
and asked them if they thought it okay
if he stretched a wire and walked between
time and space into his dream
the towers they were more than content
and they told the young man that they would protect
him and his wire as he crossed the divide
a quarter mile up in the sky

they watched over New York
and they watched over me
and they always smiled down
on Ms. Liberty
and though they may seem to some
just a memory
what once was
will always be

it will always be

with an arrow shot he tethered his line
connecting the towers in space and in time
with one small step he left the earth behind
his path as simple as one straight line
once upon a time they stood side by side
a quarter mile up in the sky
when a poet on wire walked in between
outside of time inside his dream

to go where no one has ever gone
to do what no one has ever done
to take that step up in the sky
and trust the wire with your life
