I wrote this poem for Phil Paleologos's New Bedford Mass radio show on 9/11 2003. I was to be interviewed about my detective profession as it related to 9/11. Phil got wind of the fact that not only was I a hard boiled private eye but that I was a poet. I was asked to do a poem also.
I was in Danbury and had no inspiration. My cousins Richard and Mark Wellington, suggested we drive to ground zero. We did. I approached officers, told them why I was there and that the Commissioner and I knew each other and I wanted inspiration. After a short time I was invited to sit in a squad car and be driven around down there.
I remember seeing the faces of those that died two years earlier as I rode around. I saw a partial building with an American Flag painted along with the words from the third stanza of the poem I wrote. " Don't measure the human spirit by the size of the act, but by the size of the human heart".
The TV Show host, ,Phil Paleologos, said a number of family members heard the poem so I made copies available. I have included a copy.
