Description

In "Dust (N.Y.C.)" (2008), Andreas Lau appropriated a newspaper image of three men fleeing from the dust cloud on September 11 in New York. The dust makes them almost look like sculptures, which is contradicted by the fast movements amounting to their whole appearance. The dimension of time, past and present, is an important part of Lau's interpretation of the events of 9/11.

Andrea Lau's artistic practice is based on the appropriation of pictures from newspaper articles and their translation into "pointillist" paintings. They correspond with the fuzzy style of newspaper reproductions and point to the impossibility of properly understanding an event which doesn't involve the presence of oneself. However, at the same time, Lau's works seem to transport a different meaning. It is as if the auratized newspaper picture would be somehow represented in his meticulous paintings.
