Nonprofit Disaster Relief Group of 'Courageous Workers From 9/11' are Heading to Haiti
Bill Keegan, the president of the nonprofit group H.E.A.R.T. 9/11, dropped an e-mail to The MEMO blog to share news of the volunteer disaster relief organization's planned efforts in Haiti, a country still working to rebuild after the devastating earthquake of January 2010.
A H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 team will be dispatched to Fond Parisien, Haiti today and will stay in the country through Sat., Feb. 19, Keegan reported. He said the team's "primary goal is to construct a temporary health clinic which will serve a large population of amputee Haitians and their families at the Love A Child Orphanage."
H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 Executive Board member John Viola will lead a team consisting of construction tradesman, firefighters and police officers to Fond Parisienne.
The team will help put finishing touches on already constructed homes that "need a higher level of carpentry before families can take up residence," Keegan said.
New Jersey-based H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 has partnered with the Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma to design and build primary health care centers in Haiti and other locations throughout the world.
Once the team hits the ground, check The MEMO often for updates on their efforts and photographs from Haiti.
