9/11 Memorial Accepting Volunteer Applications During Temporary Closure
Join Our Volunteer Team
Although the 9/11 Memorial & Museum is temporarily closed, we still celebrate the 312 volunteers who play a crucial role in fulfilling our mission during the annual National Volunteer Week.
Volunteers give back by putting their talents to good use in both public-facing and office-based volunteer positions, including as Museum docents, guided-tour greeters, membership greeters, and as exhibition media volunteers.
Volunteer positions provide New York City residents with ways to open a new chapter for themselves and others in a newly revitalized lower Manhattan. Mark, 63, is a local resident and has volunteered in the Museum since June 2014.
“Living in lower Manhattan when the Museum opened in June of 2014, I could not think of a better way of giving back to the community than by becoming involved with Visitor and Docent Services,” said Mark. “The emotional fulfillment continues to this day with each visitor we are involved with. As a bonus, my colleagues at the Museum have become my extended family, and I deeply value the relationships.”
Our volunteers bring skill sets that are as diverse as New York City itself. They range in age from 16 to 86 and commit to 16 hours of service per month, although many do more.
“Volunteering at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum is a rewarding experience for me,” said Nikhil, 31, who volunteers for the Visitor Services staff. “I am glad to be on a team dedicated to commemorating such an important part of our nation’s history.”
Volunteering at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum also provides those who have no lived memory of the attacks with stories and history about the events and their repercussions. Originally from Iowa, David, 23, moved to New York for graduate school and joined the volunteer program in 2018. “I volunteer at the Museum to encourage younger people to visit, so they can come closer to understanding the immensity of the events of 9/11,” said David. “I feel a great sense of pride and responsibility, knowing the sacred nature of the World Trade Center site and the great work done by the Museum staff and volunteers to create an incredible tribute to the victims, survivors, and first responders.”
During this temporary closure, we are still processing volunteer applications regularly and are conducting interviews for volunteer applicants remotely. For questions about becoming a volunteer, send an e-mail to volunteer@911memorial.org.
