Jean and Donald Peterson were introduced to one another by a mutual friend from their Christian fellowship group. They devoted their lives to volunteer work in their church and community, opting for a modest lifestyle and using their financial means to help others. On September 11, 2001, they were taking a family trip to Yosemite National Park in California. They arrived ahead of schedule at Newark International Airport and decided to take an earlier flight, Flight 93. Their airplane was later hijacked and deliberately crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m. Donald’s personal Bible, with a handwritten list of people he was praying for, was recovered at the Flight 93 crash site.
