Daniel Shea and his older brother Joseph were both known for their generosity. Joseph coached local youth hockey and baseball teams. Daniel helped support the families of three New York City firefighters who were killed on the job in early 2001. Both brothers worked as managing directors at Cantor Fitzgerald, a company that occupied the top floors of the North Tower. Amy O’Doherty, a recent college graduate, began babysitting for both Daniel and Joseph’s children when she was just 13 years old. After impressing the company during a college internship, Cantor Fitzgerald hired Amy as a broker’s assistant. On September 11, 2001, Daniel, Joseph, and Amy all reported to work on the 104th and 105th floors of the North Tower. They are three of 658 Cantor Fitzgerald employees killed that day.

Think About It

  • Why do you think people leave items next to specific names on the parapets?
