In response to the September 11, 2001 tragedy, artist/teacher, Ms. Kathleen Izzo and her 4th and 5th grade students created a quilt to commemorate those who lost their lives on 911. The 51st Avenue Academy is a public school in New York City and is located in Elmhurst, N.Y. The Twin Towers could clearly be seen from this elementary school. On 911 the staff and students witnessed the great plumes of smoke as the towers come down before our eyes. Each class contributed a 12 inch by 18 inch quilt piece symbolizing the different aspects of the United States of America. A 26 minute DVD accompanies the quilt, which documents the making of the quilt as well as the history of America.
