    Artist’s Statement
    November 4, 2001

Two days after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, I began sketching as a personal response to this atrocity. Like many of us, I was grief stricken by the number of victims and the amount of lives lost. I simply could not continue to paint pretty pictures and had to reassess my role as an artist. For is not the purpose of art to see beyond the surface of things, to uncover truths, to seek meaning. I felt obligated to fulfill this role and create a work of art that could help make sense of it all, perhaps raise spiritual awareness and offer condolence. So I commissioned myself to create this monumental painting that will serve to honor the souls who have not perished, but have moved to a new dimension. It is my candle.

    Resume

June Long-Schuman is an award-winning fine artist and teacher who has shown her work locally on Long Island, and in Newport Rhode Island. Tranquility, immortality, and the spiritual nature of existence have all played a part in her work. She is currently represented in the Home Art Gallery in Port Jefferson, NY. and has a Solo show there until May 5th.

After graduating with a BFA in Fine Art from Pratt Institute in 1977 June went on to Dowling College in 1985 to receive a teaching Certification in Art. June continued studying art at C. W. Post in the graduate program and later received a Masters in Liberal Studies from Stony Brook University. She studied printmaking with Dan Welden in 1985 and has had numerous award-winning shows featuring her monoprints.
Since 1998 June has focused on plein air painting in oils.

“My goal is to capture the light and the essence of the place so the viewer can share the experience and the feeling of being there. Art is a visual language. It tells a story, evokes emotion and preserves history.”

Eastern philosophy and an alternate form of medicine called Reiki have played an important part of Junes work. After a 2 year long period of study June became a Reiki Master in July of 2001 which has had a significant impact on her life and art work.

The historical importance of art as an expression of the times and as a vision of the future is also relevant to June’s work.

So struck by the loss of innocent life and the tragic events that occurred on September 11th, June decided to create a memorial that would pay tribute to the victims and heroes that were lost. She visualized a “traveling mural,” its theme – Faith, Love and Hope – to be a multi-panel painting that would include the faces of all the victims on the background of the American Flag. The 5’ x 6’ center panel titled “Soaring Spirits at Ground Zero” was completed in 2002 and shown locally on Long Island. On September 10th June received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Felix Grucci for the WTC Memorial TM Project. The painting is presently up for sale as well as G'Clee prints of the painting and it will be on display at the Sachem Public Library in Holbrook, NY this August. A percentage of the sale will go to the National Memorial Museum fund.

“Art, like music has a tremendous healing power – it is a vehicle through which we can reflect, observe and raise awareness.”
