911 Reliquary and 9/11 Mask Reliquary

My studio is four blocks from where the World Trade Center stood. For weeks after the tragedy, residents near Ground Zero were escorted one-by-one past barricades into our spaces for a brief visit. Along that path, I picked up discarded gloves and respirator masks worn by rescue workers. Later I arranged the ash-covered gloves and masks in separate vitrines creating reliquaries.

The process in making the 9/11 reliquaries is the same that I use to construct all my sculptures. Each work is made from repeated singular objects found in the everyday world, such as hundreds of discarded umbrellas and lost gloves, to thousands of plastic six-pack holders and colorful plastic bottle caps. Sometimes within my collections of these mundane objects I will find a special one somewhat different from the rest and will place it within a vitrine. The rescue workers' gloves and respirator masks that I found after 9/11 have an added poignancy assembled under glass.
