    Statement:

These paintings are part of a series I worked on from 1999 until 2002 called “Iconic Fictions”. These paintings are fictions: non-truths that create a “self-contained system” one that “generates its own peculiar time and space, at a concerted distance from the reality that inspired it”. The reality that inspired these paintings is always initially related to a single image, something iconic, around which events influence the space in which these images inhabit. For example, in Ode to Classicism I was working with two figures drawn from the traditions of western aesthetics, founded on ideas of beauty in ancient Greece. They are alabaster white. Emaciated children and poverty surround them. They look down upon it, impassively. The figures are laid in. I struggled with the landscape for several days prior to September 11. The landscape became the rubble of the fallen towers. Each painting in this series is a story unfolding in its making.

Modern Madonna Series: Africa, Darfur, Iraq, Afganistan, USA… 2003-present, mixed media drawings on concrete, approx 12” x 9” x 1+”.

Much of my work is related to the feminine principle, but this series more than any other, challenges modern conservative notions of “family values”. I am horrified by the lack of reverence for the mother and child relationship in the world today and in these drawings I use press photographs of women and their children in various parts of the world left to fend for themselves in poverty and war-torn lands. They are reminiscent of both shrines and tombstones.

    In One Voice Summary:

In One Voice is a 10-minute looped sound piece. it is displayed in a dark room with a concrete tower/pedestal in the center. The top block has a bowl shape. it is filled with water and has a lit candle in the center. This is the only light in the room. The first voice heard is in Arabic. Slowly other voices enter while others fade out...Hebrew, Swahili, French, Spanish, Haitian, Russian, Chinese, Sri Lankan, Albanian, Japanese... The last voice heard is American.

The test is a fragment of an Akkadian document, a prayer to the goddess Ishtar. The prayer is for the bringing back together of the scattered clan. (from Mesopotamia, approximately 4-5000 years old).

I completed this work in 2001 and it was first exhibited as part of a four-person exhibition called, "In the Rooms of our Ancestors" at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. The show opened on September 11, 2001. The opening receptions wa that Friday, the night of the national candlelight vigil.
