Artist's Statement
In 2001 I was awarded a residency through LMCC at the World Trade Center to paint the vista from the 92nd floor. On the morning of 9/11 I stopped off to vote on my way to my studio in the North Tower. My life was spared but not my work.
Influenced by moon explorations, using my imagination, I paint cityscapes from above. Traveling over New York City and its boroughs in an airplane, I began to directly experience the urban landscape from a spatial dimension hidden from a surface perspective and observed how phenomenally light continually changes and transforms the urban landscape. In 2001, I had the opportunity to paint on a daily basis from the perspective of the 91st floor of the WTC, Tower One. Here, through direct visual observation, I experienced the urban landscape from above.
