    Statement of Work

    Janet Culbertson

The impact of the 9/11 tragedy inspired me to create a series of ongoing works about this terrible event in history. I find the memory of it remains fresh and I have continued to add to this series.

My first New York City exhibit was called “Elegy to Nature”. Since then, I have been painting and drawing the many diverse aspects of the landscape. My focus has been on environmental and political issues.
I am fascinated by our complex love yet exploitation of nature.

Recently I have been painting these paradoxical aspects of the landscape in a series of works using iridescent pigments to parallel the look of broken glass, mine tailings and rainbow-like oil spills. I feel that these textural effects have beauty as well as an underlying menace. I call this series "The Industrial Park".

I was born and grew up in Western PA. After high school I attended Carnegie- Mellon University graduating from the Painting and Design department. I then came to NYC and took my Masters Degree at New York University. This enabled me to teach college art at Pratt University and Pace College, and to continue my painting and exhibiting. I now live and work on Shelter Island, NY.
