    Statement of Work

I wrote Candles and Flags to make sense of the tragedy of 9-11.

I was on Long Island at a teaching assignment on that day. My secretary looked up at me from her desk while the radio broadcasted the tragedy as it happened. She told me that I would not be able to go home. The Holland Tunnel was closed. The towers and the Pentagon had been attacked.

I owned a gallery on Fire Island in Cherry Grove at the time and raced back to it heart pounding, tears welled in my eyes, frightened. I lived in Jersey City on the water facing the Trade Towers. Many residents worked in them and Jersey City became a triage area.

When I reached Fire Island, I took the art off the walls and hung up many sheets of butcher paper and arranged art supplies so that community members could express feelings through art-making and come together to grieve.

The article is a description of that time. I feel enormous gratitude to be able to share this with you in this memorial. I spent 37 years in NYC and on Long Island. I love New York!

Both NYFA and The American Art Therapy Association published this article.
