I'm a New Jersey writer/photographer. I'd visited the Twin Towers when I was young. We went on a class trip to see them just before they opened. My mother came along because she was interested in architecture, having worked in the Manhattan office of Dodge Reports back in the 1940s. My first impression of the Towers ought to have been one of hope for the future, especially after the turbulent Sixties. My "pessimism" got me and my mother thrown off the class trip bus! Fortunately, Mom was a native New Yorker and knew her way around the city. I can still hear the footsteps of a woman crossing the plaza. I can still see the Towers gleaming in the sunshine as we made our way uptown to the bus terminal. And I still remember the shock of fear I felt looking up at them for the first time and the disbelief I felt watching on television as the North Tower collapsed into dust.
