    Statement of Work

Gesture consists of 2,996 small paintings in installation - one for each person who died as a result of the events on September 11, 2001. Physically reflecting the size of this tragedy, it is a personal study of the tremendous ramifications of this one day on our collective history.

From 2001-2003 artist Manju Shandler meditated on her experiences as a New Yorker living through 9/11 by creating this massive artwork. When hung together as an installation, the paintings form a grid of vibrant blocks of red, yellow, white, black and pink that subtly shift from color to color. On closer examination each vibrant painting on translucent polyester film bares its own mark created with grease pencil, acrylic and spray paint, paying tribute to the uniqueness of each individual who perished on September 11th and the massive repercussions of this event on society as a whole.

Manju Shandler was born in New York City in 1973.
