    Statement of Work

Ismael Quintero is a conceptual industrial designer and fine artist who was born and raised in New York. Growing up in a traditional Colombian family, he learned to always appreciate quality over quantity. He believes that art and design should have value beyond aesthetics—that they should create a dialog with their viewer about the current social environment. Quintero applies this philosophy and lifestyle language to all of his work, skillfully crafting pieces that have a story to tell and are destined to become collectibles.

Quintero started painting in third grade and hasn’t stopped since. In high school he attended the prestigious Governor’s School of New Jersey—an intensive program for gifted students that teaches artistic problem solving for complex local, state and national and international issues. He studied Illustration and product design at the Parson’s School of Design where he received a BFA and obtained a industrial design job upon graduation. Today he works as a Senior Designer at the Springs Global. He continues to design and produce work with factories around the globe, as well as sculpt, ceramic slip cast and paint.

“As a visual artist, I hope to create edition pieces,” said Quintero. “Not one-of-a-kind or mass-produced items—but a body of work that falls somewhere in between. My overall goal is to create a new lifestyle language that can be translated across many product categories.”

His premiere piece is the Odyssey Suspension Lamp. This hanging fixture is made of 70% recycled glass and was inspired by a fire hydrant lid Quintero found after the September 11th tragedy.

Ismael created this conceptual light fixture as part of his senior thesis at Parson’s School of Design. Based on a fire hydrant lid he found on Wall Street after 9/11, the Odyssey Suspension Lamp (2001) was originally realized in ceramic porcelain. The Latin phrase “Nostri Lumen Est Una” also adorns the fixture and is translated to mean “Our light is one”. “This is a very unifying piece,” said Quintero. “I want people to feel like they’re part of the healing process.” As the design evolved, he decided to refashion it out of green glass from recycled beer bottles. “Green is a very healing color. While its obvious function is to emit light, the soothing green glow elicits a calming effect. With this meaningful lamp one certainly does.
