    Statement of Work

On the day that the first Tower was hit by the terrorist's plane I had
    put on the
television and thought I was watching a movie. Then Katie Couric started
to report on what was taking place.I watched in horror and then the
second plane struck the other tower. As with everyone else, I was deeply
effected by this terrible disaster. This Tragedy is reflected in my
    painting, "Ground zero."

Newsweek printed many photographs of Ground Zero, I still have that
magazine. One of the photos was the inspiration for my sculpture,I was
impressed and proud of the First Responders for the near impossible .
effort of digging for survivors. They wil be remembered with gratitude.

I took it a step further, by making the back of the sculpture, which
I call Rebirth, look like wood and the debris became flowers. My
    hope for the future.

Though I now live in Florida,my first love is New York,I have wonderful
memories, going to see the Macy Parade as a child, working in Macy's
as a teenager.Visiting the Museums, going to the Theatre. Most of all,
I always got a thrill driving over the bridge from Long Island. The
magnificent skyline whether it be day or night is breathtaking. But
I miss those Twin Towers which were like two sentinels reaching
    up to the sky.

Artist, Bernice Baumel Harwood, born March 6, 1923 in Brooklyn New York, had lived on Long Island and now resides in Boynton Beach Florida.
Bernice was married to Daniel, now deceased, who was very supportive of all
her activities. She has two daughters, three grandchildren and twin great
    granddaughters.

She has been an artist most of her life. Attending Girls Commercial High School in Brooklyn N.Y.along with academic studies, she took commercial art. After graduation she attended The McDowell School of Art, NYC and became a Fashion Illustrator.

In 1944 Bernice entered the U.S. Navy as a WAVE, and was in the Hospital Corps. Later, trained as an Acrylic Eye Illustrator at Bethesda Naval Hospital, MD. She was one of eight Illustrators stationed around the Country, and was assigned to San Diego Naval Hospital, CA. She matched the existing eye for the men that lost their eyes in battle. Painting with watercolor on a paper disk, she copied the color of the iris. Working under
a Naval Commander, who was the dentist that took the impression of the eye and
worked up the complete process. The copy of the iris was set into an acrylic form shaped to the muscles behind the eye.making it possible for the existing eye and artificial eye to move together. Thus allowing the men to have an eye that looked quite natural.

Bernice went back to college in 1968,attending Hofstra University, L.I. N.Y. graduating Cum Laude, with High Honors in Fine Arts, and a B.S. in Art Education. Bernice works in many mediums, oil, acrylic, watercolor, sculpture, and printmaking. BERNICE HARWOOD

As a painter, I turned to multiples within the graphic medium. I found the challenge of the surprise, working with the existing results exhilarating. It is exciting to work with various techniques in etching to achieve the impression and mood I wish to evoke. These works are primarily representational. Then I found the Monoprint, with its spontaneity, use of textures and vibrant color and more abstract forms. I have incorporated some of the feeling of my Monoprint in my etchings.
I am now working with watercolors, and using some of the same feelings and techniques that I used in printmaking.
