    Statement of Work

    Written in March, 2002:

Old Glory is the ubiquitous American symbol of freedom, unity, pride and patriotism. Its popularity and prevalence rises and falls like the stock market, depending on the national political climate. It may currently be found prominently displayed across New York City, as well as in other parts of the country and the world. In times of war, its popularity may experience resurgence, as it has in the wake of the events that occurred on September 11, 2001. I found some comfort in the overwhelming display of allegiance and began photographing these flags throughout Manhattan over the past several months. I was intrigued by the American flags exhibited in storefronts of most businesses, regardless of the nationality of the proprietor. They may be found from Battery to Central Park, from Wall Street to the Upper East Side, and all points between. Big, small, some proportionally correct, others having taken artistic license, but all appreciated.

As time went on, I noticed this star spangled banner had been incorporated in some permutation into logos, posters, bumper stickers, ties, scarves, pins, clothing, candy wrappers, and even cake decorations. I was drawn to, and even sought out the more unusual, rather than the obvious displays. Flag stickers were affixed to all subway cars and city buses, but also dispensed from machines like gumballs. Stars and stripes were draped over entire buildings, but were also painted over whole automobiles. While the Empire State Building is lit with red, white, and blue most evenings, these colors now also make a regular appearance on boxes and crates filled with fruit and vegetables as they arrive at local supermarkets.

The flag appears in many derivations, in unexpected uses, yet all symbolizing a common sentiment. It demonstrates an outpouring of love, support and patriotism, for fellow Americans, for New Yorkers. It is a definite symbol of pride and unity in uncertain times.
