    Artist Statement

Born in Queens, NY to a family of artists, inventors and actors, I grew up painting and writing. I have exhibited in New York, nationally, and recently in Austria. I am represented in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and many other museums, private collections and corporations.

I traverse the urban landscape with a camera and sketchbook and work from memories of places that are derived from frequent visits and explorations. I am jubilant upon the discovery of places of intense energy or mystery marked by human use or abandonment. The images are not usually meant to be specific to a place, but to inform the viewer of the grandeur inherent in the experience of existing inside of a location. The juxtapositions of conflicting images, such as man-made detritus with nature, serve as commentary on contemporary civilization as reflected in landscape.

I was preparing for an exhibition in January of 2002, when the WTC disaster struck. I lived and painted on Church and Chambers street, and witnessed the event and its aftermath. I immediately was seized with the need to to record what I had witnessed, and what was unfolding. My show opened in January of 2002, and the images that I am presenting here were all painted in that time period, with the exception of Why Again?, a recent piece.

There are numerous reviews of the show, which can be seen on my website. The show was reviewed in New York Magazine, the New York Times, the San Fransisco Chronicle and more. There is also a published interview in the Milwaukee Journal.
