    Statement of Work

Braille Project for the World Trade Center Victims:

I started working on Braille in 1990. My first project was a clear Plexiglas box covered with Braille, and I installed blue neon lighting inside. I poked each embossed Braille code with needles, so that the light shone out through the holes. I wanted to make a contrast between darkness and light. Though the Braille is legible to someone trained to read it, the light which I added is meaningless. One of my early Braille works was sold to Cindy Sherman in 1994.

In later works, I made Braille on Plexiglas. Braille is intended for the tactile sense, but when experienced visually it is seen as patterns. By removing the embossed Braille part, I wanted to experience the frustration of not being able to see and feel.

It has been 10 years since the World Trade Center attack occurred. As a New Yorker, I was always devastated and wanted to express emotions from this tragedy as an artwork.
As a memorial monument, I want to make a large wall installation piece to remember the victims. I would like to write all the victims’ names in Braille on a wall, and the size is flexible depending whatever is available. However, instead of using embossed Braille, I will cut colorful fluorescent Plexiglas circles and attach them to the back of semi-translucent Plexiglas. People will see fluorescent color dots as patterns glowing through the semi-translucent white Plexiglas. It will appear as a minimal dot-painting floating on the wall.

I have been to the Vietnam Memorial Monument in Washington D.C. I noticed that people wanted to feel victims’ names carved on the stones. That means that they want to feel the victims’ bodies physically. By removing the tactile elements, I want to emphasize the frustration that the lives are really gone. However, spiritually they are still there like a glowing light in the air. People will conceive the idea that there is a barrier to communication between the life and death, but here the barrier will be visually transformed into an artwork.
