    Beyond The Sorrow: 9/11

The tragedy of September 11th, 2001 moved many of us to look to the very heavens above for understanding and comfort. As an artist I wanted to express my feelings in a positive way to reach beyond the sorrow of that time. This work speaks to the hope and faith needed to continue our daily lives while having such immeasurable sadness for the victims, our country and ourselves.

The quote, “Earth hath no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal” comes from a small church in Baltimore where it is painted on an arch spanning the nave.

The art, with the flower in the center of the inner circle, symbolizes our beautiful but fragile earth and all living things. Surrounding it is the starlit heavens or cosmos, symbol of spirituality and the wonder of what lies beyond earth and our daily existence.

    Resume

As an artist I often look to the skies for inspiration in the unexpected beauty found above. This includes the stunning images from the Hubble Telescope and International Space Station, as well as my own stargazing journeys into the farther reaches of Northern California.
My current abstract work explores the humanist concept of aesthetics, expressing the human spirit through a sense of the beautiful.
Incorporating luminous color, form and movement into harmonious compositions, I create acrylic paintings in an abstract contemporary form. The technique I practice is abstract improvisation, a spontaneous yet contemplative approach to painterly expression born of abstract expressionism. Using gestural brushwork with the flowing elegance of fluid pigment, the process is a visual meditation on aesthetics colored with insights and notions of the moment. For me, it is a journey into the mysteries of creativity.
