Artist's Statement
My installation, PRECAMBRIAN WALTZ, was initially commissioned by the Port Authority of NY & NJ in 1985 as a work of public art for the PA Technical Center in Jersey City, long before the unforeseen terrorist attacks on 9/11. The work was meant to be a tribute to the building of the Twin Towers in the 1960's, the first construction of its kind in the world. It carefully merges dynamic construction images from the PA's own photo archives (all destroyed on 9/11) with references from the natural and man-made worlds, into a seamless, meditative, yet vibrant photomontage. Since 9/11, Precambrian Waltz has gradually evolved, unintentionally so, into a statement of special memory and significance to the events of 9/11, as well as a symbol of our collective, unyielding strength as a nation.
