    Statement of Work

    As a printmaker I try to create works in the tradition of the painterly print. Sometimes the work resembles Impressionist or Expressionist painting in style. At the moment my focus is in monotype and monoprint techniques, both in terms of practice and the study of its history in the United States and Europe. I also have studied and am interested in exploring Collagraph printmaking. My experience in etching and screen printing is quite limited, though there are techniques and methods I plan to pursue in these areas as well.

    Printmaking is no different than any other medium in terms of the nature of an artist's goals. I am always researching, trying to emulate various techniques and to learn from them to improve my own awareness. Art should strike the viewer, make you question, inspire people and even facilitate the learning process beyond art itself.

    Artist Statement for Printmaking;
    For me, the only valid printmaking today is the process-oriented, research approach. I have an interest in the idea of the painterly print. Approaching printmaking as a student consistently renews itself and often incorporates much of what we presently know about printmaking through study of the larger, international historical context. Knowing past techniques and methods has also enabled us to come to greater awareness of the varied cultural origins of those methods as well as a greater sense of the nature of art and life for the given individual. This is only possible to know through careful study of past printmakers and artists, their methods and techniques, their innovations and thoughtful insights on art and process. Printmaking can be executed as a single medium or can incorporate multiple mediums at once. "An Aesthetic for Printmaking" sets forth my beliefs as a practicing printmaker today.
