    Statement of Work

My car was on Church Street ten blocks north of the World Trade Center where I usually parked when I came into the city. I glanced down the wide avenue to see the towers gleaming in the early morning light. I got into my car at 8:30 on Sept. 11th to make the long drive back to Vermont.

On the FDR Drive I switched on the radio. I wasn’t even out of the city when I heard the first news that a small private aircraft had hit one of the twin towers. I can’t remember much about that four-hour trip back to Vermont. I just kept driving, listening with incredulity and fear as the extent of the disaster unfolded.

It was not until I was back in Vermont, frantically trying to reach family and friends, that I saw the first images of the collapsing towers. I wanted to be back in the city I grew up in and loved. Filled with grief and anxiety, I paced my studio feeling utterly useless.

Ten days later I returned to the city. The air still smelled of burning. Some days it was so smoky it was hard to breath. At night you could see the lights glaring out of Ground Zero. Enormous flat bed trucks lumbered up Church Street loaded with chunks of twisted metal. The fire station on North Moore was lined with flowers. I volunteered for the Red Cross and listened to friends and strangers tell their stories of where they were when it happened.

Returning to my Vermont studio in mid October, my mind filled with images of New York, I created Aftermath*, a series of twelve mixed media prints. They were my immediate response to the events of 9/11. The city that had always appeared to be solid, gritty and indestructible now seemed fragile and vulnerable.

    * Six of the prints were exhibited
