Less than a week after the events of 9/11/2001 this image of words started forming in my mind. Its composition took only a few hours. The result is this tall, narrow, striking textual graphic. Each tower or verse consists of 110 floors or lines. Each floor has four syllables representing the walls of the building. The towers seem to float in air on the page. The space between the towers, bounded by the ragged edge of the words, evokes the smoke rising from the site as the towers collapsed.

The column on the left represents the event itself. The column on the right is our individual and collective reactions to it. The two verses express the shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance and hope that resonated in the hearts of those affected by the disaster, mirroring the emotions of our grieving process.
