    Elegy

I mourn lives I have never known and the legacies they leave behind. I celebrate lives I have never known as I read and listen to those legacies.

While I hold strong views about the politics and tragedy of 9/11, and my subconscious is filled with angst and confusion, ultimately, I have compassion. I have compassion for the victims, compassion for the perpetrators, and compassion for all sentient beings. All of humanity is a victim of that culturally unresolved tragedy. As the French newspaper, Le Monde, stated on September 12, 2001, “we are all Americans”. All cultures are one.

Victims’ spirits live on and speak with voices of hope. Hope that we make the best of our lives in the time we travel across the earth. Hope that we find redemption out of tragedy. Hope that we can forgive as all cultures embrace forgiveness if we seek it out and listen to its music. We can forgive the perpetrators but do not have to forgive them their actions. There is no time for hate.

The Elegy prints are a lament and also a promise for harmony on planet Earth. A lament for all that happened on that fateful day. They are also a lament for civilizations with its extremisms who shout back and forth at each other until they choose to destroy. As humans, we have another possibility, to live in harmony. It has happened many times before between peoples who worship differently, yet have found respect for diversity and to live peaceful lives in desperate times. We can nurture all of life with love and affection if our hearts are open.

The Elegy prints, numbers 1-7, were executed over a period of two and a half years. They were printed at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2017. The work was a collaborative effort between the artist, Master Printer Bandon Gunn, and Assistant, Amanda Morris. Each print is a numbered, archival pigment print with chine collé applique, printed in an edition of six on an Epson SC-P9000 printer with the chine collé elements embossed onto the base image by running through a lithography press. The base image was printed on Hahnemuhle Etching paper (inkjet). Chine collé elements were printed on a variety of papers, Moab Slickrock, Nizodo Kozo, and Gampi.

    Bio

    Robert Parker

Bob is an artist and architect working and living in Taos, New Mexico. His career in art and architecture spans more than five decades and over the past decade his art has focused on geometric abstraction. He has shown in galleries throughout North America and Canada with works in private and institutional collections.

He studied art and architecture as an undergraduate at the University of Colorado and University of Minnesota, and did his graduate work at MIT in architecture and photography under the photographer, Minor White. In 1970, together with a colleague, he initiated and was head of the Environmental Planning program at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Canada where he taught from 1970 to 1990. At that time it was one of the very few environmental programs in North America. He is the recipient of many awards for his architecture and teaching and has served on numerous boards both here and in Canada.

Bob moved full time to Taos with his spouse, Deborah McLean in 1993 and has maintained his architecture practice and art studio here since that time.
His principal mediums are painting and printmaking with complimentary work in studio art glass. He also works in sculpture and photography.

His background in architecture is also closely linked to his art and both disciplines embrace spatial form, the play of light on surfaces, and pattern making as an aesthetic motif in his work. He has been published in several monographs including “Stone Works”, a series of fine art prints that were shown by the Parks Gallery in Taos, New Mexico. He is currently working on a series of paintings, prints, and sculptural pieces. Bob was also a co-curator in 2015 for Pressing Through Time – 150 Years of Printmaking in Taos, showcasing both historical and contemporary printmakers across 14 venues in the Town including museums, art centers, and prestigious galleries.
