    Statement of Work

I started the 9/11 painting in 2003. I had always been struck by the images of 9/11 and the terrible and senseless loss of life of that day. With my 9/11 painting, I was trying to integrate faces into the images of the day, as a reminder and homage to the victims of the attack who became and were made into innocent martyrs to our democratic beliefs. Rather than paint actual images of the dead, I tried to bring out the faces that I saw in the pigment already on the canvas. This started with the image of the woman at the bottom of the painting, just right of center. Dark hair, prominent features. She is a strong woman and a great image to include in this painting. If the viewer allows the eye to relax and allow vision to glide over the canvas, different facial images will appear. Different facial images also appear depending on the viewer's distance from the canvas; different faces appear. There is a strong spiritual component to this painting. I truly hope the painting is a worthy homage to the memory of the victims of the 9/11 attack.
